I was looking for painting subjects in a rural part of Prineville and when I saw this flock of sheep I got out of my car and went up to the fence. The owner was leery of me, but when he discovered my interest he invited me into the pen with the sheep. Immediately the sheep fled except this one who stood between me and the rest of the flock. The owner was extremely proud of this Shetland sheep, telling me the story of how she lost her right eye (which you cannot see in the painting) and how she was a natural guardian to the rest of the sheep.
