I painted this composition in a steady rainfall looking west from behind Garland Nursery in Corvallis. I stood under a large pine for shelter, and it kept me dry enough to capture this soggy but endearing northwest farm scene.

I was taking a workshop by Ray Roberts and was slow to find a site to paint. When Ray came to help me, he put my easel up on a big rock (there was just enough room on the rock for me and my easel) which elevated my view by about four feet. From a higher vantage point I was able to see the many different layers of rocks jutting out from the shore, whereas on the ground they were all compressed into one. What a great teacher!
